Dive into a new form of dystopian writing with Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty. After escaping the destruction of her home planet with the assistance of the mysterious ship, Solaris, Rynah must decode an ancient legend to bring balance back to the universe. Ryan must put her trust in four heroes from Earth’s history to fulfill the ancient prophecy. Their adventure takes them across the universe where they clash with villains from Rynah’s past. This is a story of courage, growth, and learning to trust others.

Solaris Seethes is a sci-fi adventure that puts a new spin on the common dystopian story. A positive note of this book is the beautiful world-building. The author puts a great amount of detail into the scenario and the descriptions of the character. This makes it easy for a reader to immerse themselves in the story. I also enjoyed the storyline. There was a clear direction that the author wanted to go. The problem that the main character was trying to solve was obvious, and that made reading less strenuous.

On the negative end, there were many points that the story seemed rushed and then would stall. It felt like the author had a lot that they wanted to include, but then the story would just stop. For example, when introducing the supporting character, Brie, the author was developing her backstory and then Brie was suddenly transported to the ship. This occurred with the other three supporting characters as well. The problem with the shallow descriptions is that I didn’t develop any real emotional attachment to the character. As a result, when they had a failure or an injury later in the book, I found that I didn’t care. I also noticed that there were many run-on sentences with never-ending commas. While it isn’t technically incorrect, it does hinder the cadence while reading.

I rate Solaris Seethes by Janey McNulty 3 out of 5 stars. I gave it this rating because the descriptions of the different locations were beautiful, and the storyline was intriguing. It is a sci-fi adventure that is filled with possibilities. I would have given a higher rating if there was more character development for the supporting characters. I also would have liked the individual scenes where the characters find the crystals to be more flushed out and told at a slower pace. Many of the high-action scenes felt rushed. I would give this book a 2 out of 4 stars.

I would recommend Solaris Seethes to young adults who enjoy reading science fiction as well as those who enjoy adventure stories. This book has a different take on the dystopian novel and creates new types of heroes for readers to root for.
