Review of The Magician's Secret
Delvin has been fascinated by magic since he met Borlock the magician, who had been teaching him some tricks until one fateful night. Delvin couldn't recall what had happened. All he knew was that he was talking to Borlock when he found himself standing next to his unconscious, chest-stabbed body, holding a chair leg. Did he just murder the person he most admires? Or has he been set up? And who is the man in black staring at him? Delvin will find out soon enough, since it will be that very same man who accuses him of murder. Fortunately, the truth comes out and Delvin is set free, but the young man's life changes dramatically when he discovers a big secret and soon finds himself stuck in another uncomfortable situation that will lead him to be thrust into an incredible world of adventure and magic he could not even imagine as he embarks on a journey to save Hengel from the upcoming war. Will he be worthy enough to replace Borlock the magician? Will he live up to that level of responsibility? And is magic real by any chance, or is it just tricks and scams? To find out, you must read Charles Townsend's The Magician's Secret.
I had a very good time reading this book. It is a lovely escape into a world of fiction with alternating moments of laughter and concern. It is very easy to get attached to characters, especially to the protagonist, Delvin, who has a very interesting personality. The Magician's Secret was surprisingly realistic for a book about magic, and the author was able to provide a decent amount of detail to enhance the plot and craft an engaging read. The world building is absolutely brilliant (the author also included maps), with quite a few references linking back to the aesthetic of medieval times. I found the descriptive nature of it to be fascinating, with each chapter filled with juicy details. I also appreciated how fast-paced the book was. Townsend wasted no time in plunging the reader into the midst of the events. And maybe that is exactly what makes reading this book appealing and enjoyable. As soon as you start reading the first chapter, you feel compelled to read more.
I did in fact find a few errors, but they were rather irrelevant. This shows that the book was accurately edited.
This brings me to the conclusion that this book deserves no less than a 5 out of 5 rating. From beginning to end, Townsend provided a beautiful story filled with laughter, suspense, and a great deal of magic.
I find it to be perfect for all lovers of the genre, but not only them; it's even great for anyone who simply appreciates a smooth and captivating read and wants to immerse themselves in a truly innovative magic story. Due to a few brutal episodes though, it is not appropriate for children.
