Review of The Magician's Secret
The Magician’s Secret by Charles Townsend is the first book of The Illusions of Power series. The book is about the journey of Delvin Farmland, a magician who is accused of the murder of his teacher, Borlock. Delvin is accused because he was found near his master’s corpse and is sentenced to death. He manages to escape being hanged and flees his hometown to become a famous magician, performing magic tricks with his friend, Greg, in Hengel. Trouble keeps following Delvin as he is arrested by the king and imprisoned. Jarla comes to his rescue, and he is on the run again.
I love how the book is fast-paced. From its beginning, the book is filled with action and adventure. I could not help but keep reading. The author's descriptive writing added to the pleasure of reading this book. He manages to vividly paint the picture of the scenery of the character’s surroundings, the performance of the magic and every detail of how Delvin and his group escape.
The moral lessons from the characters are significant. One example is when Delvin is sentenced to be hanged. Some of his friends supported the decision, which speaks to being careful of whom we call our friends. Another example is Jarla’s decision to kidnap Princess Fionella. It shows the importance of being selfless as a leader and that peace comes at a drastic cost.
The character development in the book is amazing. Although Delvin is the main character, I love how crucial Jarla is in the story. At some point in the book, she can be mistaken as the main character because of how her actions become turning points in the story, like when she kidnaps Princess Fionella to return her to Argent. Her bravery and commitment to saving the two kingdoms from war, including saving Delvin, is very inspiring and reveals her selflessness. Delvin’s character reminds me of the saying, “a prophet is not appreciated in their hometown.” I love how the relationship between Jarla and Delvin acts as a cliffhanger for the next book in the series. One can only wonder if the pair’s relationship will develop into a wonderful romantic story.
The book has no spelling or grammar errors. It is perfect for fans of fantasy, adventure, and action. However, the violent scenes of the book are graphic in description, making it unsuitable for children below the age of 15. There is nothing I disliked about the book, which makes me give it a 5 out of 5 stars rating. The book is classified as a fantasy, which makes it religiously neutral.
