Review of Terms of Service
The AIs are watching every breath you take and every move you make. They know so much that they can predict what you are thinking. The AIs serve various companies: transportation, fashion, food, matchmaking, etc. Dare to violate their terms of service rules and suffer the consequences. They will make you wait in line for hours to get on your bus. They will force you to ride at the back of the bus with the rest of the undesirables. The AIs will strike when it hurts you the most.
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill describes a world that gives you everything you ever needed: shelter, safety, food, and entertainment. Kim is one of many living a mediocre life in a mediocre apartment. She dreams of obtaining a promotion and working with AIs. Kim is doing her best to keep her head down and avoid selfist behaviors that threaten the greater good of the community. That is until she tries pushing the rules' boundaries and gets baited by the AIs to breach more rules. She then starts questioning the integrity of this system and if she ever had the freedom of choice. Does one have a choice when breaking the rules would condemn them to a life of disgrace and misery? Why would anyone desire the freedom to make their own rules? Is this life worth living? Are the AIs aware of the misery they cause?
I did not want to imagine what would happen next. I just wanted to read the book the way the author intended. The plot was captivating from start to finish. I was interested in how the AIs interacted with humans, displayed a sense of right and wrong, and tried their best within the boundaries of their orders. The AIs are supposed to be all about logic, but I found it hard to regard them as what they are, just machines. The characters' personalities were so amazingly developed that I found myself sympathizing with a refrigerator. The author provided sufficient information about how Kim's world was created and how it functions. It was intriguing that even in a world where fairness is preserved by AIs, corruption and favoritism are still on the table.
I did not dislike anything about this book. I even found it extremely easy to understand the technical inner workings of the AIs. I loved this book. I would honestly reread it.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The story was captivating, futuristic, and enjoyable. The story flowed seamlessly and was compelling till the end. It was exceptionally well edited.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy diving deeper into a technology-driven future world. This is a science fiction novel full of suspense and amazing manipulation tactics. It is a great read. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
