The story begins with Delvin, the main character and magician enthusiast, is falsely accused of the death of his close friend and travelling magician, Borlock. What starts as a tense beginning leads to a fantastical journey upon the discovery of a stone among Borlock's possessions leads to unlocking a magical secret. What this stone means to Delvin and how this becomes a key component to his actions. A great quest ensues with characters such as a rebellious princess, a black magician and mistaken identities. There is a thick plot filled with twists and turns that leave the reader anxious to find out what will happen next!

The Magician's Secret by Charles Townsend was a captivating and enthralling journey that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The characters and their part in the story were riveting. I also appreciated the amazing character growth of the main character as he tackled the hurdles that he faced on his journey. As the reader, I felt enraptured by the plot and the multiple layers of storytelling. The world that this journey takes place in is complex and inviting. The twist on the use of a typical understanding of magic was a great addition to this fictional world. Each character adds their personality and perspective to the task that befalls the main character. As the reader, I was charmed by the humbleness of Delvin and grew to like his attitude to twists and turns just like he did as the story goes along. The other aspect of the book that I was astounded by was the larger scale of the plot and the setup for a longer journey that will continue with the following books

The negative aspects of the book are few and far between. Even the characters that are written for the reader to be against had redeeming qualities that you can't help but sympathize with or forgive their actions as they all have a key component to the story. The only character that was purely evil was the black magician which is a compliment to the author's writing as I passionately disliked this character for his actions.

The book was very well written and read as if professionally edited. As there was a spelling error I sadly have to give the book 4 out of 5 stars. Due to the more mature subject matters and graphic description of topics that would not be suitable for younger audiences, I have to suggest that this book be read by young adults and older ages.
