Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service, written by Craig. W. Stanfill, is a science fiction novel set in an AI-driven dystopian world. The protagonist, Kim lives in a world dominated by artificial intelligence which controls every aspect of her life, ranging from what time she wakes up in the morning to what dinner she is served each evening. In this world, citizen behavior is based on a merit system, whereby each person is allocated a ‘social cohesion rating’. This determines the type and quality of life they will lead. Kim initially tries to keep her head down and out of trouble, as expected of a model citizen. She finds herself becoming disillusioned with her mundane, controlled lifestyle and induces sleep with vodka. This sets a wild turn of events in motion, as the story unfolds.
The author creates a completely new AI-powered world rooted firmly in the future, which the reader is able to immerse themselves in. The detailed writing is immaculate, containing lively descriptions without error. It is clear that this novel is well-written and professionally edited. In addition to this, the setting of the novel is, for lack of a better word, super cool! The social concepts of this technological world surrounding gender, family, dating etc. are fascinating to read about. The author is exceedingly imaginative and succeeds in bringing a completely new world to life. Not only is it riveting, but also extremely relevant.
There were absolutely no unlikeable aspects in relation to this novel. It is a gripping read that keeps readers invested to the very end. It is important to note that within the context of this novel, the theme of gender identity and sexuality becomes somewhat obscured. I would like to clarify that while I did not find this to be a negative factor, it may be triggering for certain readers. Discretion is advised when deciding to read Terms of Service
This novel is recommended for fans of the science fiction/dystopian genre. It may also be popular amongst technology fanatics, considering the heavily incorporated AI theme. The novel does contain a mild degree of mature content and is therefore, intended for the young adult target audience.
I found this novel to be particularly interesting because it makes us ponder about what the future of technology holds. The author’s take on evolving societal conventions are deeply thought-provoking and go beyond the bounds of an average sci-fi novel. I thoroughly enjoyed Terms of Service and would highly recommend it to others. It may just surprise you! Seeing as I cannot fault this novel in any aspect, I rate Terms of Service five out of five stars.
