Review of Tau Ceti: A Ship from Earth
The science fiction novel “Tau Ceti: A Ship From Earth” by George T. Hahn is about a space colony and it’s independence from Earth. Pitcairn is twelve light years away from Earth and one of its most successful colonies. A peaceful world without dangers, enough resources to thrive, and no politics. What more could you want? But things are changing and not in a good way. Suddenly, Earth is starting to make decisions affecting the colonists without consulting them. To make matters worse, some colonists support Earth’s decisions, which creates a divide among the colony’s population. Will Pitcairn gain independence from Earth, or will it be sucked into its politics?
This book does not have one main character but, instead, the chapters follow a number of different colonists. The leader of the colony, an engineer and her husband, a transport driver, a couple of scientists, and the head of the research station. A lot of different people get put into the spotlight. This is very beneficial for the world-building, as it let us see different viewpoints and opinions. On the other hand, some of the characters are underdeveloped as the author does not have enough space to develop all of them. For example, the head of the research base is an interesting character who is uncertain whether to stay loyal to the colony or to obey orders from Earth. However, he gets less attention than he deserves.
This is not an action novel. It does not contain fighting. I have read several books that were similar and most of them had the problem of being boring. This novel avoids this problem by building mystery and conflict. There is no fighting but the threat of it is always present. Even the passages where they talk about science or engineering are not boring, since they are not stretched out. The science is also not extremely complex, and most of the technology is left up to the imagination of the reader.
An important aspect of any science fiction book is world-building. In this book, it is helped by the different characters. They help us understand this new planet. Unfortunately, the planet feels exactly like Earth. There are no major differences. The story could take place in any rural part of Earth. It does not make the plot less interesting but the world lacks imagination.
I give this book four out of five stars. The story is entertaining and the characters are unique, and enjoyable. I took one star away for the world-building but other than that it is great. There are also no grammatical errors.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy science fiction without all the fighting and action. People who can simply enjoy a story because it is engaging and the characters are well-written.
