An amateur magician found himself involved in a murder of a beloved friend and master of magic, which led him to pursue a career in magic and make it his form of living. Once in the big city of Hengel, Delvin unintentionally becomes a significant piece to detain a war between Hengel and Argent along with princess Jarla, the duke of Hengel's daughter. Fortunately, his recently-discovered and impressive magic abilities would help them and their accomplices to stop a disastrous war while overcoming a bunch of obstacles, including eliminating the enemies from killing them during the process.

I found the plot of the book fascinating, and I loved how the story unravels. Every chapter had something new and exciting; many plot twists during Delvin and Jarla's journey kept me wondering what would happen next. I liked how the author portrayed Delvin as a humble magician whose confidence needed to grow stronger, but with excellent mental skills and clever thinking, which was necessary to figure out the main reason for the absurd attacks between the land of Hengel and Argent. And also how the authoritarian personality of princess Jarla was a great complement. The description of the characters and places was just enough to imagine every scenario; the author did not waste words on unnecessary explanations, which made the reading enjoyable and not boring.

It was hard to find something I did not like about the book; perhaps the only thing I could dislike was that I believe Delvin did not get much recognition from princess Jarla and the duke of Argent for everything he had done for them, but I have to keep in mind that the developing of the characters are up to the author and that is what makes literature great. But other than that, everything was remarkable. I found some errors in the writing, but nothing big enough to make me change my opinion about the book.

I rate The Magician's Secret by Charles Townsend 5 out of 5 stars. The book was very intriguing and entertaining; the detail of the maps of the fictional places at the beginning of the book was excellent since a significant part of the story consists of the main characters traveling through Hengel, Argent, and their surroundings. The way the book is written makes the reader absorbed in the narrative; every piece of drama around the cause of the soon-to-start war and the suspense behind the intentions of the black magician makes the book captivating. I would definitely read another work by this author.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading fantasy books, kings and castles-related stories, family warfare, or anything related to a fantasy world reminiscent of Europe in the middle age, in which magic and mythical creatures are a big part of the story.
