Bed of Rose and Thorns by Lee Hunt is a novel written in a characteristic fairytale style. The created world is deceptively reminiscent of the Middle Ages. It is filled with knights, royalty and carefully hidden intrigues and secrets. At first the book seems to be mainly about the affection the main character, Ezra, has for the queen. But the main plot contains many mysteries to discover. When someone threatens his queen Ezra goes to any lengths to find out who is behind it.

A definite plus of the novel is the creation of a medieval fantasy realm. The plot includes both dynamic battle scenes and quiet romantic scenes. And thanks to rich descriptions of the scenery, one can easily imagine the appearance of the world depicted. Also, the descriptions of the main character's feelings and experiences are moving. Thanks to the flashbacks and rich language, one can deeply explore the feelings and emotions (such as love, yearning and suffering that comes with it) that the protagonist has to face.

Many characters appear right at the beginning of the novel without any introduction - they just are. Despite the list of characters that begins the book, it is difficult to remember them all. Some sort of even brief introduction of the characters and a staggered timeline of their appearances would have made it much easier to get to know them. Furthermore, although many strong and empowered female characters are presented, the description of them leaves much to be desired. From the very first page men are described on the basis of their personality traits, while women are pictured mostly according to their appearance. Only later through their actions can one learn more about their personalities.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The plot of the novel seems to be carefully thought out and planned, and the plot twists are well placed, providing the reader with a good story timeline and keeping the reader interested.

Bed of Rose and Thorns is definitely a book for everyone who enjoys love stories about knights and brides. However, it should be kept in mind that the novel was written in a style reminiscent of medieval works. There are sentences in the text that use the construction of repetition (e.g. "He willed a tremor out of his hands, hands that wanted to reach of their own volition to the door and open it.") - this is a specific style of writing that may not appeal to everyone. Due to presence of sensual, erotic scenes, the book should be read only by mature readers.
