Matthew Tysz's We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a beautifully told tale of a world with a dark overlying shadow of a past dominated by evil magic. The story is narrated through the perspective of 3 major characters: King Wilhelm, the ruler of Voulhire and stationed in Soulhire, the kingdom's capital, Galen, a budding young man ready to take up the legacy of a great uncle he never knew all the way in Magnum Caelum, and Lord Eldus, the new ruler of the town of Hillport. Each of the major characters takes on a unique challenge placed upon them and in their journey to take on these challenges, allies and challenges alike are ever-present. A very powerful magician acts as the main antagonist despite his existence lacking concrete backing.

A huge positive in the book is the narration by vivid description. Each setting is described in depth playing close attention to aesthetics with a dab of history being blended into a beautiful narration that sets an exciting mood and draws the reader closer to the story. Furthermore, the story intertwines magic and reality in such a smooth manner taking out a lot of the mysticism behind the magic.

For all the wonderful narration, a lot of the plot development occurs on events that appear to be loosely attached to the flow of the story. With the switch between the three main perspectives of the story, once in a while a new character appears and their subsequent actions appear to be detached from the ongoing story, which tends to disrupt the flow of thought while reading.

I would give We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies a rating of 3 out of 4. Despite the commendable narration, once in a while it can become a challenge trying to read for long due to the introduction of plots that, while they add to the general story, they might appear to be a little bit misplaced.

Any fan of sci-fi would enjoy this book especially considering the effort to maintain as many features of the real world in this magical realm. Due to some strong language and sexual themes, this book is strictly for mature readers. Moreover, the book has some instances of child abuse which may be an issue for some of the readers. The story also has some religious themes but in this case mages are part of the religious leaders and as a result, I am doubtful of people of any religious belief having much trouble with this.
