Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a sci-fi thriller about a young man, Galen, who comes to the prospering kingdom of Voulhire to inherit his uncle’s estate. Galen is from the land of the Princes, which has been devastated by war. When he arrives, he finds himself in the middle of another war, that of Lord Melodrath and King Wilhelm. Personal motives and ambition are at play as in any power-related fight. Galen has to find himself in the middle of all the chaos in his new home and hope that the tension brewing in Voulhire does not lead to disaster that could threaten his promised fortunes.
The action in the prologue of the book is what got me hooked. The author brings out the fantasy in full as Lord Orlin is dethroned by Lord Melodrath in a deadly epic magical coup. The detail of how the magic manifested from start to finish is a wonderfully recorded piece of action.
What I enjoyed most was the author’s descriptive writing. I found it amazing how I could see the Voulhire landscape and areas that surrounded it, the climate and the dress code of the people there. This kept me interested and shifted my attention from the story to just the environment of the main character. He used very vivid imagery. The character development is impeccable. I enjoyed the description of the rulers of the land, from Lord Orlin to Lord Melodrath and Lord Eldus. With these descriptions, the author subtly describes the types of leaders in politics and how their leadership styles affect their people.
The structure of the book is impressive. The author interchanges between first-person and third-person narration. He uses first-person narration when Galen is involved and uses third-person for other characters. This was a creative way of making Galen the main character while telling the story of the other characters in a balanced manner.
I enjoyed the themes the author wove together. The thriller, political, and science-fiction aspects. Since the book is part of a series, the cliffhanger at the end of the story was expected, and the ending did justice in triggering the hunger for the next instalment.
Fans of thrillers and science fiction will love this book. Readers interested in politics may find this book interesting because of the themes it covers regarding leadership. The book is well written with no spelling or grammatical errors detected. However, the book contains profanity-laced language and graphic descriptions of violence and instances of rape. For this reason, this book is not recommended for minor audiences. The book is a blend of magic and religion, which religious readers must be cautious of. For these reasons, I give the book a rating of 3 out of 4.
