Review of Korian: Ark of the Fallen King
Korian: Ark of the Fallen King by Giorgio Garofalo is a fantasy, science fiction that portrays a good versus evil plot. The book is set in the world of Endura that's inhabited by humans, firstlings and other mystical creatures. Some individuals have superpowers like the huntsman and sorcerers known as manians. The sci-fi element comes as a pleasant surprise as more of how the war against Aaron and Adam began unravels. The ark has something to do with it. The main conflict involves Aaron and Adam Hades who team up to squash the resistance of humans and firstlings. Particularly, they want to kill Korian and his magically gifted friends. Korian is the chosen saviour who everyone believes can defeat Aaron, Adam and their dark army of the undead. Although Korian has accepted his fate as saviour, his full powers are held back by his grief for his love, Sara. He is unable to fully focus and have clarity on what to do to finally defeat Adam and put an end to Aaron's terror.
Korian: Ark of the Fallen King is the second instalment in Garofalo's Korian trilogy series. After years of uneventful hiding, Korian and his company witness a strange bright light across the sky, coming from the other end of the island. As the group heads out to investigate, they are weary of what they will find. The strange light of the burning trees may be a result of Aaron and his army looking for Korian and the group. Knowing this, the group continue through the woods towards the source. The journey reunites them with a friend from the past but also puts them in danger. Korian realises that he must trust his companions to help them escape each time they get into trouble until he gets his faith back.
Garofalo writes an interesting backstory. For the most part, the book narrates the group's journey as they flee the island and get ashore at Endura. In this instalment, we get to learn about Oren, and Adam and how they were related even before their lives in the palace. Within Oren's story, we get to also learn Korian's history. For me, the highlight is Adam's backstory, how he came to be so evil and angry. This history made it worthwhile for me to read the book. Also, it reels you in, to look forward to the next book and if you haven't read the first book, it encourages you to read the prequel.
It is because of this that I rate Garofalo's Korian: Ark of the Fallen King 3 out of 4 stars. The storyline is original and captivating. Garofalo captures the different mannerisms between Korian and the others and it is more pronounced when Korian expresses his frustrations at the attacking skine during the fire. His description of Endura's landscape is vivid.
This book will be enjoyed by fantasy book lovers as well as sci-fi book lovers. Garofalo creates this fantasy world, parallel to earth with mystical creatures similar to those of earth. The twist is the unexpected addition of this mad scientist that changes the life of a planet to fulfil his greed for power. I recommend it to mature readers and older teenagers.
