Something was different about the world, Max knew that. From being the strongest fighter in his world, Max had been reduced to the helpless body of a child. There were other things too. The world and people around him had changed. Armed with only a strange apology from a mysterious entity called the Messenger, Max must fight to build his way back up to the top against this world’s strongest. There were other issues however. Max must manage his relationships with the people he meets including his annoying neighbors, work partners and friends. Despite the smiles on their faces, there are deeper ulterior motives at play. A battle far more complicated than simple fights, Max must tread carefully on the board where one wrong step could spell his downfall. Can an abandoned child really succeed against such a cruel world?

Changing Masks by Nicholas Metelsky holds a world that has a deep political landscape in rich detail. The methods for accumulation of wealth and power by Max through such a highly politically charged environment were quite interesting to read. I also loved the characters of the story who were written with such quirky and memorable personalities. The language used was also quite simple that can be easily understood.

There were a lot of aspects of the book that were poorly done. The writing of the story was terrible. There was too much information trying to be conveyed most times which led to an annoying excess of information dumping. The descriptive language used in the book was plain and not vivid at all which did not help to color and bring life to the world. The plot focused more on Max’s rise in political power rather than physical power. This had me disappointed as I was expecting a story on a rise to the top through exciting fights and training. The few fights that it did have were not challenging enough to seem gripping or meaningful. The plot had no clear structure as well, since there was no clear beginning or end. The beginning of the story was confusing to navigate and understand and the end seemed anticlimactic due to the lack of a main conflict and thus, its resolution. This affected the pacing of the story as well. Since there was no main conflict, there was no climax nor a buildup for it. The pace remained slow for most of the story which made the reading experience dry and boring at many points. The crucial reason for the lack of a main conflict would have to be the lack of a main antagonist. Despite having a cast of interesting characters in the story, the critical component of character development was missing. The editing of the book was of very poor quality and negatively affected my reading experience to the point where it was frustrating and hard to comprehend the writing numerous times.

I would give this book 1 out of 4 stars. I deducted the stars due to the extremely poor editing and the various aspects of a story that it fell far short on, that I have explained above.

If I had to, I would recommend this book to teenage lovers of fantasy fiction, especially if they have an interest in political tactics.
