Review of Tales from the Gray Area
Tales from the Gray Area- a highly intriguing set of 7 novellas.
Some of the most imaginative, unfettered and beyond the realm kind of stories can be found in this book, Tales from the Gray Area, which contains 7 novellas. Curtis Stephen Burdick has an amazing imagination and a talent for keeping the readers curious and gasping for more.
Each and every one of the stories in this book are unexpected, gripping and take you on a journey into the unknown. Reincarnated, Bottom Dwellers, Vacation from Hell, Discoveries at River View, Sorceress, Alien Addiction and Sanctuary are the titles of the novellas housed in this collection. Aren’t these beautifully named titles? Imagine diving deeper into each novella and being swept away into a realm that we could not even guess by the name!
This collection gives us a perspective and a “yes, that could possibly be something to think about” feeling about the unknown. The theories of aliens being on earth disguised as humans; creatures and civilizations of the legends, that bring up a feeling of unbridled horror and fear of the destruction of the living world; mysticism about the seers and intuitive individuals that the world cannot really make up its mind about- are they real or fake? Are the real ones really real or just sophisticated and manipulative individuals who can put up an act better than the best of the best in Hollywood; the harsh and yet bitter sweet changes propagated by the World Wars that made the world what it is today- are all controversial and yet much imagined topics that demand and get unrivaled attention of storytellers like Mr. Burdick. I can say with utmost gratitude that all these topics have been given unparalleled justice through these beautifully written novellas. My absolute favorite story amongst all the 7 novellas would be the Sanctuary.
The book has been mostly well written and edited. I noticed just one grammatical discrepancy, which might seem small but felt very jabbing when I read it. I read this book as a PDF on kindle, so there was definitely some issue in the text conversion there.
The only complaint I had as a reader was that each one of the stories seemed to end very abruptly. But despite that I have rated it 4 out of 4 stars because of the quality and content of each of the stories. The author has the ability to successfully make a reader wanting for more- like a fish out of the water. Each of these novellas has great potential of being made into a novel, because all of the topics in the stories have a lot of literature of its own and vast possibilities of exploration.
If you have qualms of reading about aliens or fortune-telling, then a few stories might not be suitable for you. If you are a fan of The Twilight Zone or love to read books that the king of horror, Stephen King writes and creates, then this book is a must read! I can definitely vouch that Tales from the Gray Area will definitely be the reason for a lot of hyper-activity in the gray cells while reading this book.
