Soul Train by T.C. Husvar is a fictional book about events surrounding the protagonist, Joshua Sherlock. Joshua finds himself in a vintage train station with an intense headache, a different set of clothes and a ticket in his pocket that he doesn’t remember purchasing. He boards a train alongside people who are seemingly in the same position as him, confused and curious but also obedient to the stern train conductor. He soon finds out that the ticket in his pocket is actually special compared to what the others have and that he needs to protect it at all costs. Throughout the journey we find Joshua traveling to different stations of the afterlife, starting from Heaven, then Purgatory and, of course, the various levels of hell. His main companions include the hotheaded Madeline, the intriguing Jason, the always fair Teff, the mysterious Pedro and the tortured yet beautiful Tiffany. We are taken on a rollercoaster of emotions making us feel anxious about the fate of the main characters, anger towards the antagonistic passengers and sadness about the inevitable judgement they all had to face.

Husvar has created an immersive experience with an intriguing world and many unique characters. The protagonist can be relatable to most with his struggles with anxiety and other uncomfortable emotions that are torturing him both in the afterlife and the world of the living. The storyline itself is fast paced making it easy to read the whole book in one sitting without ever feeling bored. The different stories of each passenger force the reader to reevaluate their moral view on good and evil when coming across situations that can only be described as morally grey.

Unfortunately, the book has many grammatical errors that are hard to ignore most of the time and many descriptions of situations seem to be used multiple times making it very repetitive. For example, Joshua and his feelings of anxiety seem to be mentioned a lot from beginning to end using the same description each time without explaining further. There are also multiple situations that were not explained at all, leaving the reader perplexed by the end.

I am rating the book 3 out of 4 stars, as it is a good read with a lot of potential, but the execution could have been more thought out.

I recommend the book to anyone who loves interesting characters and would be intrigued about a journey in the afterlife, but at the end of the day who wouldn’t be?
