Timewise by Robert Leet follows the life of the ambitionless Ron Larsen as he makes his way through the pitfalls of young adulthood. Ron found solace in playing chess as a child, which is where he first met Professor Regina Russo. As he grew older, Ron parlayed his love of math to the poker table. With hopes of college being dashed due to a series of losses, Ron worries about what direction his life will go. That is when Regina Russo comes back into his life with an offer to pay for his college courses. The monthly stipend would only be paid on the condition that Ron received all A’s and that he met with Regina to talk. The monthly meetings would delve deep into Regina’s theories on quantum physics and lead to experiments exploring time travel. Ron’s college ended and he began a career in finance with his new wife, but what happens when Regina reaches out for help with her new experiment?

Timewise is well-written and has a good flow. I liked the inclusion of the pictures and diagrams when various aspects of theoretical physics were being discussed. Ron is a likable character and the situations that he ends up in are relatable to the struggles of being a broke college student and a directionless young adult. Ron’s interpersonal relationships are authentic. I particularly liked his relationship with Cheryl.

On the negative end, I had a challenging time following along with the mathematics and the physics dialogue. I do not come from a physics background, which caused me to reread sections multiple times to minimally understand the material. The ending came off as blunt, which made me wonder what the whole point of the story was. Towards the end of the book, I was disappointed by the rush to the end.

I give Timewise by Robert Leet 3 out of 4 stars. The book was intriguing and the interactions between characters flowed naturally. I rated the book lower because the theories were difficult to understand, and the ending was lackluster. I also found the interactions with the FBI to be implausible.

Timewise is recommended for those who understand mathematics and theoretical physics. If you do not have a basic understanding of these subjects, then you will have a tough time following along. I also would recommend this book to those who enjoy more realism in the Sci-fi genre. Regina’s theories on how to view time offer realistic counters to modern discussions on space and time.
