Of the Earth is a story about devout Christians in a dystopian world where they are forced to renounce their Christian faith, or they will be executed. The story follows brave Christian believers who refuse to renounce their faith and are rewarded for their continued devotion. This is a story about faith and how maintaining faith in the darkest of times can result in life’s greatest miracles.

Of the Earth is a book that is easy to read with sweet and earnest characters. The author, Kim Cousins, uses an apocalyptic event to demonstrate how important faith is and how it can change people. I found this interesting to read, as it showed characters not only grappling with their faith but also how some characters began to open themselves up to the idea of faith. Of the Earth features many references to the bible which I am personally not too familiar with. This allowed me a unique insight into an unfamiliar subject, and I found it intriguing to note the references made to biblical verses.

I genuinely enjoyed reading this book, but there are some negatives that I would like to mention. The characters in the book are likeable, but they also lack complexity. I think more focus could have been put on building the character’s personalities. This would have helped ensure that characters have distinctive qualities. The characters seem to be quite similar in terms of the way they spoke to one another and their mannerisms. The story would have been more engaging if more attention was paid to world-building. Of the Earth consists mainly of biblical references and describes characters finding their faith, losing it, or maintaining it but leaves bigger questions like what exactly caused the apocalypse left unanswered.

Of the Earth offers readers adventure, the opportunity to follow characters through trials and tribulations, and reminds the reader of the power of faith. It is my opinion that the intrigue and enjoyment a book may offer holds far more value than any other flaws. Therefore, I think the positives of the book far outweigh the negatives that I have listed above, and I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

Of the Earth is a refreshing and interesting read that features a strong religious influence. I would not recommend it to anyone who is not interested in religion, especially Christianity. I think people who are devout Christians and are looking for a book that explores the idea of faith in an adventure-filled setting will enjoy this book.
