From the beginning of time, civilizations have been built up and brought down by racial tension, greed, wars and differences of opinion. The Brimstone Chronicles: End of the Last Kingdom is a well-written book about the beginning of Sulphurium civilization and the many changes the peoples of said civilization went through – during unrest, conquer and changing politics. This is also a coming-of-age story about Brimstone, a young mage realizing and accepting his full potential as a powerful agent of change. As it so often happens with children who find themselves having to navigate growing pains, teenage years, puberty and authority figures they do not necessarily agree with, Brimstone is initially not sure of who or what he is or what he is expected to become. The reader follows this mage from his very humble beginnings to developing his powers and confidence, all while navigating friendships, love and the ever-changing world climate.

While reading this story, it is extremely easy to get caught up in the characters and really become interested and involved in their lives and fates. Victor Rose does a wonderful job of bringing an engaging storyline all the way through and leaves the reader wanting to know what happens next. The Brimstone Chronicles: End of the Last Kingdom is a good study in the habits and mindset of those in power and what they represent to the ones that have less of a standing in society.

There is some disconnect in the beginning, as we are introduced to an important historical figure and then by chapter two are introduced to the character who would become the protagonist. It would seem the reader is to infer that the main character from the second chapter onward is the same from the start of the story. Unfortunately, it does not appear to overtly reconnect to the beginning at any point, so it is easy to disregard the first chapter as you continue the story. There are also instances of abuse and a section speaking about children being sold into sexual slavery. It does fit the storyline and the sexual slavery is only mentioned in a limited capacity early on, but if anyone is sensitive to scenarios such as this just be prepared.

I did find the descriptions in certain areas to be a bit wordy at times, though not annoyingly so, and the storyline really keeps the reader interested as it progresses. Despite the disconnect from the first chapter, I rate this book a solid 3 out of 4 stars.

If you happen to be a fan of fantasy featuring dystopian societies, reminiscent of such works as The Hunger Games and Uglies, then I highly recommend this exciting book!
