A Dead End Job uses a sense of humor while toying between the undead and reality. With a twist towards the end, this book kept me on my feet deciding which way the main character would turn. While Buck (the main character) hasn’t had the best life so far, with a broken heart and a dangerous job, Death finds him at his worse. With the help of Death and his IT guy, Jumbo, Buck has been granted meaning to his life and immunity from Hell, but is his new job just as he envisioned? Just as Buck gets into some trouble, an unexpected friend and ally turns up and just so happens to be the best thing that Buck needed in his life. It’s full of undead vampires, zombies, vampires, etc., and is perfect if you like all things “undead”. Death itself also has a funny side which brightens up the underworld. With a little bit of humor in the story, it makes death and the underworld not so scary.

Justin Alcala created a story of the underworld and made it modern, funny, and exciting. He brought in characters that fit the undead. The names of the characters were a little strange but I found them fitting with the story. The older names went well with the older vampires, zombies, etc., and the more modern names went well with the newer characters. The epilogue also made me want to read another book. It had a good background story that definitely intrigued me and made me want another story. I’m curious to see how Buck and Lunas relationship grows and if she begins to open up and start to talk. I also wonder if Luna would start to help Buck on his future missions. Bethany also seemed like she liked Buck, so I wonder if their relationship goes any further. Overall I give this book a 3 out of 4. I liked how the story was modernized with Death living in an apartment and having an actual IT guy who is in a wheelchair, but you also get those fictional chapters where the underworld shines through more.
