In the fantasy book End of the Last Great Kingdom by Victor Rose, we follow the journey of a young boy named Leaf on his way to becoming a powerful mage called Brimstone. Once Leaf becomes Brimstone chaos begins to ensue. Brimstone and his crew Crimson have to learn how to work together and apart to secure the safety of the whole world.

My favorite aspect of End of the Last Great Kingdom was the plot. It was enthralling and made you want to continue reading. I did find some parts to be a little bit confusing, but I feel that way with many books in the fantasy genre. In the end, all of the confusing parts became clear, and I was able to understand where I went wrong.

I did find a couple of faults in this book and that includes the ages of the characters. I felt like the trials and traumas the characters had to endure were unrealistic for 10 to 13-year-olds. Not only did they not act like young children, but they were also not treated like it either. I would have much preferred the characters to have been in their late teens or early twenties. I believe it would have been able to advance the plot more and also make a fantasy book seem a little more realistic.

I love when books switch to a different point of view, but only when it is done correctly. The author did not give any indication that they were switching to a different character. I found it to be a little confusing and hard to keep up with. I believe this could have been an easy fix by just putting the name of the perspective in the chapter title.

I would rate this book as three out of four stars. The book appears to be professionally edited and I did not find any errors. I did enjoy reading this book, I just didn’t find it to be four stars worthy. In my opinion for a book to earn a perfect score, the book needs to be perfect. For others, this could very well be their perfect book, but for me, it was not.

Although the characters are very young, I would not recommend this book to anyone younger than thirteen. Some of the scenes in the book were a little graphic and gory in their descriptions, which I think a young child should not be reading. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy books with magic as one of the main topics.
