It's hard to imagine Death as a person. In A Dead End Job by Justin Alcala Death had dreadlocks. He was so cool he could even go on vacations. However, people still needed to die. His buddy Jumbo proposed an idea that got Buchanan Palasinski killed by the hand he dealt others.

Buchanan, also known as Buck as he preferred was born on the South side of Chicago. Life hadn't been a bed of roses for him growing up. His father had physically assaulted him, his brother and mother severely. When he got tired of it, he left them. His brother got locked up shortly after that. Buck tried to work hard in school, but he ended up dropping out of school. He hadn't been lucky with love either. His lover, the only woman who'd ever loved him got shot. The business of taking lives became his fate even in the afterlife from that day.

The book was enjoyable and interesting to read. Its concept is quite fascinating too. The author did a good job of developing the characters in the book and the story was also well paced. From the moment I read the first page on to the last, I was captivated all through. The language in the book was simple plain English that made it easy to read and understand the book. The fact that the author dedicated this book to people who lost their loved ones during Covid was very heart-warming.

There was no noteworthy negative comment that I can hold against the author. I did not spot any grammatical errors or typing mistakes in the book which led me to believe that the book was well edited. There was a bit of vulgar language here and there throughout the book, but this did not affect my enjoyment of the book. It also did not influence my rating of it.

While I recommend this book to readers who enjoy fictional thrillers and those who are curious about death and the afterlife, I give this book a 3 out of 4 rating. Majorly because this was an interesting read. The author's wit fully employed stylistic devices and writing styles like humor and dialogue to make the book light and less boring. I would like to commend the author for making the chapters to be considerably short and sweet. The book was also not a heavy-paged one which was nice. Long books tend to be boring and discouraging to read.
