Review of Agents of Karma
A young man who is half-dragon, a Japanese yokai, and a skeleton who doubles as a computer genius are the central characters employed by Alex Smith in Agents of Karma to tell this story of adventure, thrill-seeking, and the existence of the supernatural. Axelacious Drake (Axel) is a socially awkward, pessimistic young man who sees himself as the universe's punching bag. However, desperate for a change of scenery, he moves to New Orleans at Uncle Vincent Drake's suggestion. Axel moved to a house believed by the locals to be haunted. The house is called Maddison Manor and is, according to local lore, haunted by a force that kills any human that dares to dwell in it.
After a search for the house that is complemented by some warnings of the fate of everyone who has tried to live in it, Axel finds and moves into Maddison Manor. In his first few moments in the house, he is stabbed to death by the ghost that lives in it. Axel comes back to life and decides not to run away but to stay with the ghost, and this establishes him as a thrill-seeking daredevil at his core despite his apparent pessimistic persona. With his coming back to life and choosing to befriend the ghost, Axel's life changes, and he discovers a world of secrecy, constant interactions with supernatural beings, espionage, and crime-fighting. This book details the journey of Axel alongside Kejoro "Jo," the yokai who stabbed him, and Miguel Rivera, the computer genius skeleton. Find out what they achieved together and how their friendship turned out in the end.
One of the best things about this book is the author's style and great attention to detail. While reading this book, I could clearly see the images of the events being described conjured up in my mind's eye. With the writer's impressively descriptive language, I did not have a hard time trying to imagine what certain moments were like. I could clearly see them in my mind's eye without difficulty. I also appreciate the straightforward development of the plot. Moments segue into each other seamlessly as the story unfolds. With each moment leading up to the next, I did not get confused as to the development of the plot, and it made for a very easy and enjoyable read.
However, I find that the book would have been better if the characters had encountered challenges in their adventures because that just makes for a really interesting, suspense-filled read. The author made it too easy for them. As the heroes of the novel, they would have been stronger with some challenges as that would have made them stronger and better, which is the mark of heroes. That would also pass on real-life lessons to readers, especially the younger demographic. I also think that there should be consequences for Axel, Jo, and Miguel's method of crime-fighting. Essentially, I believe the book should have been more realistic and had a stronger and more balanced sense of justice.
A few grammatical errors exist in the book, but other than that, it is evident that the writer and editors were thorough and thoughtful in the making of this book. Despite my minor issues with the story, I would still give it a four out of four stars because I quite enjoyed reading it, and it has shown me how important it is to have people by your side. I consider the book to be professionally edited.
This is a light-hearted story of adventure, and I recommend it to lovers of adventure novels. Readers who want to know how things work in the supernatural realm will have a great time reading Alex Smith's Agents of Karma. If you are on vacation and need a book to keep your mind busy, this is the book for you; it is an easy read that is also fast-paced. I also recommend it for book clubs and young adults.
