Who in their right mind would like to be abducted into a UFO, travel hundreds and thousands of miles from your home, just because a computer says you’re special? Right. No one. But what choice does Ryan Stathis have? With the mission to save the universe from a formidable and ruthless empire from the other side of the universe, Ryan embarks on a journey to the other side of the universe through a wormhole, close it and deliver that device that controls the wormhole to a certain group of aliens who are “friends” with the computer that mans the UFO.

But luck was not on their side, the empire came across them, taking them as prisoners. Ryan escaped with two friends, Flare and Bubo to a populated planet named Yenovia seeking refuge, his original mission aborted. But upon discovering the empire’s goal, Ryan knew he had to fight back, keep the wormhole closed forever and escape the oppression of the empire together with the planet’s locals. His goal is to get this over with and go back home, while the locals’ goal is to defend their home. When the wormhole opened again, Ryan had his chance to speed home, but what he sent was just a message to Earth, that in order to save the planet from destruction in the hands of the empire, Ryan must leave Earth forever.

From a workaholic aeronautical engineer to being a prisoner to becoming a fugitive are just the first roles of Ryan as he journeys through the universe in Alex Zadeh’s science fiction series Dark Matter Empire. This is the first book to Zadeh’s science fiction series. A novel that involves a lot of action and science, especially the fields of physics and space exploration. A story packed with adventure, adrenalin and drama, of loyalty and friendship, and treachery that makes my stomach sinks every time that Ryan is betrayed by someone he considers a friend. From the first page that I opened the book, I was hooked with the easy words and the vivid narrative of each event that builds the story. There are no flashbacks and diversions that made the reading experience easy, and adventurous. I didn’t even know the book was ending until I flipped on the last page.

Alex Zadeh created a wonderful world where you can travel alongside interactive computers, lots of different star systems and unimaginable aliens that somehow make sense in their alien ways. All the distinct features of the creatures of a new planet is masterfully crafted and the culture that these people have is beautiful. From the ape-like Flare, to the organic robot Bubo, my mind is racing with possibilities that there’s more to this world. It almost makes me wish that I could open my own wormhole straight into Zadeh’s world.

Ryan’s character took a lot of changes as the story progresses, which makes him unpredictable but that didn’t alter his human nature. Flare is just an amazing friend and warrior who puts his people’s welfare before his own. Bubo is an entirely different story, who wouldn’t love an organic robot alien that could perform multiple tasks including eating tons and still find ways to save his friends in a dire situations? And the Yenovian Locals made my heart swell with inexplicable sense, I love their patriotism and spirit.

I haven’t found any errors in my reading even after having read the book twice. So I must commend this book for being well-edited.

With is, I rate this book four out of four stars. The plot is well-constructed and the character development is superb.

This book is suitable for science fiction lovers especially those who likes action-packed science fiction. Also for people who would like to immerse themselves in alien worlds and AI, this book is for you. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.
