Review of The Great Trespass
Rob Gryffon is having a terrible day. He boards a flight back to the continental United States from Costa Rica only to be told there is no record of him ever being on that flight. To top that surprising bit of information, he has arrived in the country two years after he left Costa Rica. He is thrown into the middle of an extraordinary battle involving otherworldly creatures intent on eradicating the Earth's population. He must first decipher the importance of his role in this strange situation and discover how he can use it to save everything and everyone he holds dear before it is too late.
When I first picked up The Great Trespass by Steve Teets, I was intrigued by the title. Science fiction works would always tend to carry sensational titles; it could probably be in a bid to draw attention and boost sales. But this one was different. The name fitted like a glove to a hand. It created that mystery before you open the book, and I daresay it powered the suspense like a battery as I sought to discover what this 'trespass' was. The storyline was very impressive. Time travel would always be a complicated topic. Any author trying to include it in their storyline would need to employ a monumental effort in keeping their story on track and understandable. Steve Teets aligned his storyline exceptionally. Despite the constant jumps from one timeline to the other, I could follow it without any difficulty. The majority of the book's characters were well fleshed out. Each of them had a motive behind their actions, and as the suspense built up to the climax, those motives were revealed flawlessly. The addition of a table of characters at the end of the book was a neat touch too.
I did have an issue with some aspects of the book. For one, I did not understand the importance of the link between Taylor's research and Rob's role in the war. At times, it felt like I was reading two very different stories. Not much background was mentioned about the origins of some of the protagonists in the book. This left many questions unanswered about the motives of the factions involved.
Science fiction lovers will stick to this book like fish to water. It packs quite a punch in the action department with the guns, bombs, and scary subplots. There is also enough romance in this book to catch the attention of the romantics.
The errors are minimal, and the author's writing style is easy to follow. Steve Teets has done a commendable job with The Great Trespass. However, I rate it 3 out of 4 stars due to the issues mentioned earlier.
