Review of Doyle's Law
Doyle's Law by Sam Roberts is a fictional sci-fi novel with four main characters. Dr Ryburn, a former celebrated scientist, lost his glory when his mission on Mercury failed several times. The investors become frustrated and withdraw their investments. Chief O'Connor is sent with his crew to dismantle parts of the spaceship. Ryburn, who other members think is crazy, is conducting experiments on ores from Mercury. He makes a remarkable discovery that changes history on matters of space travel. However, an unfortunate event sends the space station in a dangerous orbit where they are left with a few days before everything blows up.
Several strange phenomena encourage mistrust between the crew members, and tension escalates quickly. The author has written a simple and understandable story that readers quickly get engrossed in. There are various themes that a prominent, like leadership and friendship. The author has integrated human tendencies like frustrations, joy, mistrust, and human psychology flawlessly to fit into the narrative. The characters have different background stories that make reading about them highly fascinating.
Many sci-fi novels are often written in a complicated manner that makes it frustrating to enjoy the book. However, the author has written this book in an artistic manner that makes the reader eager to piece the puzzles together. I enjoyed how the different caretakers and other characters got on each other's nerves. This makes the book more believable. The book at the start seemed a little bit slow-paced and repetitive, though it picks up pace later. Also, it is imaginative and immensely creative. The end of the story is unpredictable. I often looked forward to finishing the story so that I could know what happened to all the crew members.
At the start, I think the author overexplained the plots; however, the book gains momentum as you go on. It has many plot twists that I thoroughly enjoyed at the end. The book contains many instances of profanity that might discourage some readers. It also has grammatical errors that did not affect the flow of the story in any way. Other than that, I did not find anything that could criticize this story. This should not discourage any potential reader because this book is worth it.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The grammatical errors and the plot's start are the reasons I deducted that one star. I would recommend this book to an adult audience, especially people fascinated by time travel stories or lovers of sci-fi books.
