When I noticed the author of this book was Tayma Tameem, I immediately decided to go for it and as usual, she did not disappoint. I like to think instead, that she over-delivered in her science fiction novel, Rulers of the Galaxy. In the beginning of the book, Salarin, who is the heroine of the book, wakes up to find an aftermath of what must have been an intense war. She has no memories whatsoever to explain the reason for the war and how she got there. The only living person she sees around her is a baby, who looks as helpless as she did.

Soon after, unfriendly-looking soldiers confront Salarin and she immediately knows that her priority in the present is to save her life and that of the baby. Her escapade and quest for answers takes her on a journey where she meets new persons, makes new friends, encounters new enemies, and visits new planets. In all these, she is faced with new challenges that she must overcome if she must survive, save the baby and solve the riddle that her life now seems to be all about.

Rulers of the Galaxy is a story of inter-galactic and racial conflicts that unfolds greed, cultural bias and the strength of a woman. It speaks directly to the imaginative sides of the readers. The book is full of twists and adventures orchestrated and undertaken by the different characters. My favorite character in the book is Bosco. As the ridiculousness of his name suggests, Bosco is a sarcastic and hilarious person. I absolutely love how he always kept his calm and comical side turned on, even in times of danger.

I feel that Rulers of the Galaxy began with hype, but somewhere along the line, the book seemed to have lost that hype only to regain it in the concluding chapters of the book. The presence of hype-less parts is what I liked least about the book. What I liked most about the book is that the different scenes of conflict were described in very dramatic ways that painted pictures in my mind and made me feel like I was watching the story in a movie.

By and large, Rulers of the Galaxy is a good book that is well crafted, excellently edited and super interesting. Based on these, I give the book a rating of four out of four stars and I recommend it to any lover of science fiction and fantasy novels, or anybody that loves a good story.
