Blockead by Kyle J.S. Bardell is the story of a headstrong and hardworking girl who has only ever known life inside her family´s ranch, and when outsiders come to change things around she must quickly learn the way the world operates. She is forced to make fast decisions and is at a crossroads between obeying the plan made for her by someone else or venturing alone into something else entirely. Either way, her future is uncertain because keeping things unchanged is not an option, and both the options she has are worlds away from life as she knows it.

I enjoyed the world building. It´s not the usual kind of world we often see in the fantasy genre and it is very refreshing. It doesn´t have too many sci-fi or fantastical elements during the first few chapters, so at times it felt like the “normal” world, but as the story advanced they would surprise me.

The last part of the book was unexpected, but to be fair, little aspects of this book were to be expected since you begin following the journey of a girl living and working on a ranch which is very far from what the story turns into. The ending left me with many questions although that´s not to say that it had plot holes, but rather great opportunities the author left open to continue the story. I´m very invested in these characters’ journeys and would absolutely read a sequel.

The characters were well established. There are some we don´t get to know a lot because of how shortly they appear in the book, but the main ones are well developed. Bronco in particular is a wonderful character. Everything she does is cohesive with what she´s been through; her personality is consistent with her backstory, which sounds obvious but I have encountered many authors who don´t execute that appropriately.

I think among the inspirations and influences from the world we live in, the author took the way in which people are viewed for their usefulness or convenience to society instead of their humanity and turned it into a new world in which these aspects of capitalism and individualism are magnified.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars for two reasons. The first being that I found a total of four errors although they weren´t significant enough to pull me from the story. The second reason is that I would have liked for the author to go more in depth with the characters and the working system of that society. I want to clarify that I think the author did a great job with these characters and giving them each their own voice, but I think he could´ve taken it further because I wanted to know more about Bronco´s thoughts on the social system with all the drastic changes in her life.

Blockhaed includes profane language, violence and gore, as well as the involvement of sensitive topics like child abuse. I would recommend this book for fans of sci-fi or fantasy, or anyone who likes reading dystopias.
