Review of Tales from the Gray Area
Several children born on the same day in different locations all over the world bear on their necks, specific marks similar to those inscribed on some tablets found in India over eighty years ago. While conducting research on the pacific ocean, Dr. Madeline and her ship's crew encounter a dangerous, rapidly adapting octopi species. These hungry creatures easily eat the crew members, are hard to kill and may take over the world. In hell, demons are threatening to go on strike if Lucifer does not allow them a vacation on earth as promised. An alien emperor who is an addict comes to a rehabilitation facility on earth.
Tales from the Gray Area is a book of fiction written by Curtis Stephen Burdick, which comprises seven novellas. Each story is fast-paced and ends on a cliffhanger. There are several themes present in this book, such as love, death, alien invasion, racism, war, reincarnation, supernatural powers, and addiction. Overall, true to the title of the book, all the stories have a paranormal tinge to them. The stories are short but evoke powerful emotions and deep thought in the reader.
I liked many aspects of this book. The stories were interesting and flavoured with the paranormal element present in each of them. I loved that all the stories, despite being short, had a resolution of sorts. This was very satisfying for me. At the same time, it was very clear that the story could go on. I could easily see how each of the stories can be turned into a television series. I also loved how the comedic element in each of the stories kept things light.
I do not know which story is my favourite. It is a tie between Vacation from Hell and Alien Addiction. I loved both of these stories and read them more than twice. The book was edited professionally, and the absence of errors made reading pleasant for me.
I could find nothing to dislike about this book; I award it four out of four stars.
I recommend this book to lovers of fiction with paranormal elements. Anyone who likes a good story will enjoy the book. It is appropriate only for older teens and adults because it contains obscene language. Those who dislike books in this genre, or who like only nonfiction, might not enjoy this book. As for me, I enjoyed this book very much and will definitely read the stories again in the future.
