Review of The Wanting Hearts
The Wanting Hearts (Book One of the Heartless series)
by Nicole Jordan
The Wanting Hearts by Nicole Jordan is a book compiled of five short stories in which you can find yourself relating to some of the characters through the insecurities, depression, heartache, and abuse they find themselves being held captive by. Although this is a work of fiction ranging within the genres of sci-fi and fantasy, the stories within portray real-life circumstances that readers might relate to. Within The Wanting Hearts, you will find stories of Werewolves, Vampires, and even alien abduction. However, these short stories are nothing like the cliché stories I have read before, it brings forth a uniqueness within the werewolf world, heartbreak within the vampire world, and a rude awakening to the real world in the first short story The Dream.
I am astounded by the writers’ creative ability in detail to the physical appearance of the characters in the short story The Unknown which revolves around alien abduction. I find Nicole Jordan’s writing style admirable; it has the uncanny ability to draw out the characters' emotional feelings from the reader. I find it impossible to choose my favorite story from this book because I enjoyed the originality of them all. The curiosity about what will happen next in The Unknown leaves behind a feeling of impatience having to wait for the continued version. I am however extremely excited to know that there is a positive turn of events in the Young Sire.
The beginning of the book was a disappointing start for me. The introduction of the first short story The Dream did not grab my attention from the beginning and it was littered with spelling and grammar errors throughout the entirety of the story. Furthermore, I found it challenging to follow the storyline from the beginning however, it gets better the more the story evolves followed by a climactic end.
This book truly goes by the saying “save the best for last” …
The Wanting Hearts is an exceptional piece of work, the book truly can make a reader want to read more, that’s how captivating this book is. Therefore, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This book has a consistent reading pace, it is easy to read and the writer’s ability to bring the characters to life is phenomenal. The development of the characters is impressively done and clearly shown within the individual short stories. The short stories contain a mixture of romance, action, and some thrilling moments.
In addition, I would recommend this book to young adults and teenagers because of the content contained within the book and I believe they would find it easier to relate to the characters within these short stories. This book contains sensitive topics such as homosexuality, mental and physical abuse, bullying, and graphic descriptions of violence. The Wanting Hearts broadens the perception of werewolf and vampire stories, it would be a great read to the supernatural lovers who enjoy reading fantasy books. I declare The Wanting Hearts a must-read!
