After her father's death and her mother remarrying years later, Donja Bellanger moves away with her new family. She struggles to accept leaving behind her old life and adapting to a new one. Donja and her stepsister Makayla bond and find out they have a lot in common, allowing them to lean on each other in times of need. Out on the town one night, a mysterious stranger, Torin, saves Donja from an unfortunate fate. Their lives collide unexpectedly, drawing them together. An immortal psychotic killer who preys on innocent women targets Donja, making her a prize in a game of pawns and threatening her family. In turn, for the worst, Torin plots to rescue Donja from the clutches of something dark and sinister that endangers everyone's existence. A great battle ensues, ending in tragedy and sacrifice.

Karen Glista does a great job with her characters' personalities and life problems, making them more exciting and relatable. The book is easy to read. The plot offers a ton of engaging romance, heartbreak, sacrifice, love and thrilling fight scenes, packed with hidden secrets and ulterior motives, strict laws and frightening experiences. The descriptions are well-written and provide a good visualization of the scenery and settings, especially the crime scenes, which effectively trigger that inner gut-wrenching feeling.

I enjoyed the story and found it hard not to keep turning the pages, anticipating what would happen next, but I felt put off by Donja and Torin's romance. It seemed rushed and sometimes proved unrealistic but redeemed itself as I came to know the two characters. Overall, some awkwardly constructed sentences and grammatical issues such as punctuation and spelling took away from the author's writing.

I rate Chasing The Red Queen a 2 out of 4 stars. I felt the beginning dragged out, and the action and romance took a long time to happen. Once these elements came into play, the story flowed and intrigued my interest, redeeming itself at the end. I enjoyed being a part of the journey, which offered some unexpected plot twists.

I would not suggest this book to young audiences. It's intended for young adults/adults. There is a lot of brutal violence and graphic murders scenes involving nudity. Vulgar language and descriptions appear throughout the book's themes, and sensitive subjects such as sexual violence and suicide present themselves. I recommend this book to people who enjoy a good love story packed with action, mystery, and immortal beings.
