The Wanting Hearts by Nicole Jordan is the 1st book of The Heartless Series. It's a book containing 5 unexpected and interesting stories. The short stories explore diverse topics and genres like sci-fi, horror, with a mix of a thriller. You can find stories with a diverse range of characters, from a salty burnt-out woman and her peppy best friend to a wealthy and snarky vampire. Whenever the plot starts to feel predictable, a plot twist jumps out and punches you in the gut.

When I read the description, I was excited. The concept of short diverse stories written from the point of view of different people going through different things is captivating. Unfortunately, I was disappointed as soon as I started reading.

I found the writing style stiff and unnatural at first, although it slowly gets a little better throughout the book. The writing style just does not sit right with me. There are uncomfortable moments scattered throughout the book like when Emily describes how a co-worker receives a promotion by flaunting her body.

The book did not seem like it was edited at all. This book does explore some deep topics, some being brief. The book, aside from the endings, most of the time, fails to evoke empathy or any emotion. It was hard to relate to the characters, and the characters themselves felt weird and not fully developed. For example, being peppy and helpful felt like Sandy’s only personality trait. The stories feel like they need to be fleshed out more, I would also love some more backstory and information.

As for the positive aspects, I enjoyed the Author’s creativity, and I do believe that The Heartless Series has potential. I admit that the ending of the first story made my jaw drop, while another ending broke my heart. I appreciate the diverse range of characters and the situations they find themselves within, it was what made the book somewhat enjoyable. Even though the characters felt shallow, they are what made me stick around for the end.

I probably would not recommend this unless you're looking for something unfamiliar and creative. Young Sire does include depictions of Child abuse so if you’re sensitive to that, maybe steer clear of this book. This book is suited for mature audiences because of profanity.

I rate this 1 out of 4 stars because of all the typos, stiff writing style, and the characters and stories themselves.
