Review of Steel Reign: Flight of The Starship Concord
Steel Reign: Flight of The Starship Concord, written by Braxton Cosby, starts with Reign desperately trying to rescue his sister, Olia. Who was taken and forced to participate in Gladiator-type games. On his mission to save her, he meets Gifford, a tech wizard that is a superfan of Reign’s and wants to help him on his mission. The plan they come up with involves stealing something, something very valuable and housed in a very dangerous place. After meeting up with a couple of new friends, they continue on their journey. Will they succeed in stealing this object and rescuing Olia? Or will they fail?
There is a lot that can be said about this novel. Firstly, what a great story. The imagination that was used to create it, is incredible. It was a story like none I have ever read before. There was also the obvious joy and passion that the author put into his words. That aspect of the novel really makes it special.
Secondly, Cosby added a really cool and unique aspect to his novel. Instead of writing the words “no one,” he would instead write “no 1”. This does not seem like this would do much to the reading experience, but it really does impact it. I found that whenever I would come across one of these instances, it would make me pause. Then when I continued on reading, I was paying more attention and enjoying what I was reading more.
Thirdly, there is an abundant amount of spelling and grammar errors in this novel. This was rather disappointing because it made reading this story fluently quite difficult and understanding it difficult. There were not only just spelling errors and words switched, but there were also many run-on sentences. This especially led to confusion because there was so much being crammed into one sentence that it was hard to process what was taking place. These errors lead to the belief that this novel was not professionally edited.
I would rate this novel 2 out of 4 stars. This was a great story with very humorous characters and emotions that leap off of the page. However, I took two stars away because of the spelling errors and the run-on sentences. These characteristics took a lot away from the reading experience. I would recommend this novel to teens and young adults who enjoy space travel, adventures, great characters, and heroes. Steel Reign: Flight of The Starship Concord is a fun read with lots of action, mystery, and humor.
