Tobin Marks writes a brilliant SF/dystopian story titled Ark of the Apocalypse set in the future about our world that has been torn down over the centuries. As world wars rage with nuclear technologies and the surprising alliances between certain countries, the people of Earth find themselves at a great loss… the great loss being Earth itself. Human kind needs to find a way to mend the Earth, find a way to escape the fate they have made for themselves or become extinct.

He makes very real and obvious nods to issues we are facing today with climate change and provides a worst case scenario including sea levels rising so much entire cities are engulfed in water, a great lack of precipitation that forests turn to deserts, important rain forests suffer wildfires and are burnt to the ground and arguably the worst of all, the decline of fresh water. This allows his readers to reflect on how we are treating our planet and serves as a reminder to be responsible for it.

There are also refreshing feminist views written throughout this novel. There are many important figures and roles that are female characters, as well as male. He shows an ideal balance of power for both genders. This utopian feminist ideal embedded in Marks dystopian fiction provides an opportunity to reflect on the world we live in today. Definitely a positive element for any feminist.

Tobin Marks sets up his plot perfectly by offering a detailed and exhilarating history of Earth’s wars ultimately forcing humanity to evacuate. It is apparent that Marks uses his experiences of his travels around the world in order to bring depth to his writing with settings including: Russia, Japan, American, Australia and more.

It is clear that Marks has thought carefully about the characters in his book and how/ when he wants to introduce them. Since this book follows Earth’s fate over hundreds of years, the plot follows not only important characters, but their families over generations. This is something I find unique in his writing. He does this and is still able to show good character development and not only allows the reader to become invested in each character, but entire families.

This novel has been proofread relatively well but does have some minor grammatical errors/typos. I would rate Ark of the Apocalypse 3 out of 4 stars with its thrilling plot and use of fantasy elements makes for an exciting read that is hard to put down, though with some typos and grammatical errors I have docked a star. This speculative fiction novel does include graphic and violent senes as well as some coarse language and because of this I would recommend this book to a mature audience that enjoys dystopian, fantasy novels involving technological advances, including space travel, and isn’t too squeamish or offended by some colourful language.
