Review of Portals
Initally we follow Mary who has been in a car accident. While in the hospital, she and her boyfriend enter a space, controlled by their thoughts. They have to choose between various options of how their life could go, should they choose it. First they choose Education. From there we follow Joe who becomes obsessed with climate change and taking action against global warming and other environmental problems. When he and his friend Kevin get shot at a Black Lives Matter program, they encounter the same choices. Whenever Joe and the people near him are in a dire life or death situation, they are offered the choice in the space controlled by their thoughts.
Jon Zimmer did a good job explaining the ways everything could go wrong if we don't change to sustainable development. The language is easy to read and understand.I like the way climate change and other environmental problems were written and the lack of actions taken by governments to counter it. I'm glad that Joe and Mary realize how privileged they are. Most people do not have so much money to spend freely and I'm thankful that they acknowledge that fact. I like how aware Joe is of certain things that most people don't even give a second thought about. "He would never emotionally grasp the fear of just being arrested, or rejected for a job, or not able to live where you want to, or looked upon as not equal, and so many other things, just because you’re black."
There were so many errors that it took away some enjoyment in reading the story. The conversations between Joe and Mary seems a bit formal. They are way too mature for 18 year olds. That is not necessarily a bad thing. I felt as if the author is continuously telling me that Joe is emotionally smart and is a very responsible person. He doesn't make any rash decisions and never does anything wrong. He's too perfect to be real or relatable. The fact that Joe and Kevin get multiple chances at life is unfair to the rest of the population. They die so many times yet choose the same multiple times. They could have chosen other portals and see where those lead to. The story takes place around 2020 in our own planet Earth, but there's no mention of the COVID -19 virus that claimed the life of so many humans. It is surprising that the book didn't mention it even once. The end was disappointing. After seeing so much death and destruction due to climate change, how could they not accept it? The book had a hopeful note throughout yet the footnote made it seem that it was all for nothing. Maybe the footnote could be changed a bit. For people to know that there is hope if we change our way of living. The font changes suddenly on Page 99 and on Page 130.
The size of the font changed suddenly in Pg 105.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I couldn't enjoy the book due to the numerous mistakes I found. I do feel that everyone should read the book at least once to know how our future is going to look like if we don't change our attitude towards the environment.
I think everyone should above 15 years of age should read Portals , after it is edited. It talked about important issues ( like global warming, climate change) and also talked about methods to tackle it. It might seem silly but it is a very important topic on which our lives depend.
