Review of The Elf Brief
The book: The Elf Brief by Jordan David is the first in the “Magi Charter” series. The next book is “The Elf Archive”. This book follows Noel Night: An elf in North Pole, who has no idea how a single message to come will change his entire life. Also, the elves are divided according to color of their hats, which indicates the department they are working for. The book is narrated in first person point of view and follows Noel’s perspective.
Noel receives an odd message from a golden hat (Administrative Department), that Santa Christo, the current Santa would like to see him. He is in a dilemma about what he has done wrong or whether he was being dismissed from North Pole. Being an orange cap (List Department) himself, Noel has always had a habit of making notes of everything he has seen, so that it is accessible to him at any given moment. At the Elf Brief on the next morning, Noel is mesmerized to see Santa for the first time up close. But a bomb is dropped on him that he must visit the human world for a very important mission, on the very next day. According to Noel, leaving North Pole was never an option, but a request/order from Santa cannot be declined. He is very confused about what he should do. Putting his trust in Santa, he goes on the Mission. He must accompany two purple hats (First Contact Department) members who are not very happy that someone outside their department is going on the trip. They give him the cold shoulder. He slowly and steadily realizes that there are way too many secrets about the North Pole than what is seen on the surface. He is assured that he is not wrong when the purple hats assign a new elf to follow and track his every action.
The aspect that I liked about the book, was that it was based in the North Pole. North Pole, being one of the best places to build a fantasy, brought up a different kind of joy reading this book. Also learning about the different departments, how they work and coordinate, was interesting.
The aspects that I did not like about the book, was that it was solely in Noel’s perspective, it would have been fun to read from Santa’s point of view.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was a complete a new experience for me to read about something I have heard so much about. I did not enjoy it that much to give it a four-star rating. Also, the book was well edited, and I found no errors.
I would recommend this book to people who like to read about the theme of Christmas because with elves and Santa, it gives a very holiday vibe. There are no instances of profanity, or any kind of sexual content seen in the book.
