Review of Worldlines
Did you ever have a dream so real you could swear it happened? What if it did happen in an alternate timeline? Loosen your grip on reality to look in on Gary Jackson’s life in the novel Worldlines by Adam Guest. Mr. Guest included a unique plot twist to surprise readers.
Gary Jackson is a young student about to take a final exam at Blackthorn Comprehensive School when he is nearly run over by a lorry as he stopped to pick up his pen. While attending a physics lecture at college, he told the class how he was nearly killed. Professor Buzzard proposed the theory that he may have been killed in an alternate timeline. Gary is a lucid dreamer who can control his dreams. In one dream, Gary murders his girlfriend, Michelle. One Gary goes to prison for the actions of Gary from another timeline. The characters remain the same, but events are different. Sinead, Gary’s best mate in one timeline, is his girlfriend in another. She is a supportive and true friend. Sinead’s mother suffers from vascular dementia. During one of her seizures, she sees Gary commit murder. Professor Buzzard explains the multiverse theory and believes Gary’s account of events in those worlds. He enlists other colleagues to help Gary. How will they help Gary in another timeline? Are there infinite timelines?
The timelines would have been confusing but each parallel world was easily identified by the different events. The characters were well-developed. Their personalities were consistent throughout the worlds, but their actions suited the events in each parallel world. I enjoyed the book immensely. It was easy to read and easy to follow. Mr. Guest wrote the book in the first person which made it seem very personal. Sinead was my favorite character. She was supportive, loving, and strong throughout each world. I was completely surprised by the way Gary’s defense attorney was convinced to represent him. There were many plot twists to keep the reader guessing.
There was nothing to dislike about the book. There was some repetition, but I felt it was necessary. Repetition assured the reader that some events remained the same even though the outcomes were different.
There was no explicit sexual content, only mentions of sexual preferences and occasional vulgar language. For those reasons, this book would not be appropriate for younger teens. Fans of science fiction/fantasy novels will love this book. People who enjoy the concept of parallel dimensions will appreciate this novel. I found no obvious editing errors and happily rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I expect to enjoy the next book in this series.
