We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book out of a series of nine books. This fantasy has a variety of characters, and is filled with magic, warfare, adventure and mystery. Galen Bray is a refugee fleeing from a war-torn land, going to Voulhire, a safe land with endless possibilities and riches. We follow his journey of having to learn the craft of forging and having to adapt to his peaceful surroundings. The newly appointed Lord Eldus tries his best to undo the damage from the previous two lords, and finds himself excited about the journey ahead. But also realizes what a difficult path it may be. A prisoner on an island close by is a very powerful magician surrounded by an armada of ships, just waiting to make his move. The Riva Rohavi is a rebel group who stayed quiet for decades, and a lot of people expect them to stay that way or have forgotten about them.

One of the positives about this book is that Matthew Tysz has brought in a lot of different characters. You can find all kinds of people in this book. Some with a great sense of humor, others a bit shy, and some just outright irritating. And it’s always great to read a story with such a variety of people. Other than the different characters, the building storyline is great when you see how everything fits together.

A negative of this book is that it is the introduction into the series of nine books. And thus it should be read as such. The story takes a long time to begin, you spend a lot of time getting to know the different characters before something really happens. But it is still captivating and worth the read and you will find a lot of action and adventure in this book.

I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It is a captivating book that has a wide variety of characters, it is well written and edited. It contains humor but also dark scenes, mystery and action.

I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys magic and warfare and all of the conniving plans that come it, and to people who like to read series of books. Because you will not be able to only read this book in the series, the story is just beginning and you are left wondering what is going to happen next.
