The Wanting Hearts is the first book of the Heartless series. It consists of five stories with different storylines. "The Dream" is about a girl Sandy and her friend. They go on a trip to London where Sandy meets the person from her dreams. "The Unknown" is an alien abduction story. The protagonist Niko, is forced to leave the earth and serve the creatures known as Draydalou. "You Stupid Vampire" is about a vampire named Roman, who lost all his wealth and ended up as a cashier in Walmart. "Reunion" is a story about a lady called Cass, who goes to her hometown to participate in a school reunion function. This visit gives her the reasons for all the hate and bullying she had got in her school. "The Young Sire" is about a vampire who runs to save his and his fledgling’s life.

What I liked overall about the book is the unexpected turn of events in the stories. Though the stories are short, the author Nicole Jordan did good work in the character's development. “Reunion” is my favourite among the others. The climax of the story was not exactly as I guessed but still it seems acceptable for me. It was short but still felt completed unlike the story of “The Dream”.

Each of the stories has a dark element in it. The story I liked the least is “The Unknown – Part One”, the starting segments were a bit confusing for me with the terms and names used. Towards the end, it was clearer to understand. “You Stupid Vampire” is apt to a short story but still, I felt like a huge part was missing at the end and have an incomplete feel about it.

“Young Sire – Part One” though the protagonist had the usual vampire characteristics, the storyline was unusual. The end of this part one is interesting, that I am happy the author got another part to this. I would like to read the next series of this book just to know the rest of this story.

I think the book needs to be edited once since there were errors and typos in it. Some parts of the book were dull and I found it difficult to follow up. So I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I suggest this book to adults who like short science-fiction stories. Child abuse, graphical and violent content are in the “Young Sire” story which is not preferred by some readers.
