Review by Pinkpolanco -- Superbugs by Tayma Tameem
Superbugs Book 1 by Tayma Tameem is an interesting take on what might become the end of the COVID less world we once knew. Although it is classified as a science fiction book, it is easy to get lost in a world that seems so similar to the one we are living in. 70 years have passed since COVID-19 and things only seem to have gotten worse. In a world now being run by a single power-hungry government, the characters in the story all strive to survive the only way they know how. Some become leaders or mentors to those that need to be taken care of. Others not knowing where else to focus their pent-up anger, turn to the violent gangs now running the streets. While a few others go to work for the government despite being sickened by their unapproving conscience.
The author’s imagination in creating the story’s characters is impressive. Tayma keeps you involved in each of the character’s thoughts and feelings, making it hard not to become invested in their lives. The way the author describes the world these characters are living in is completely terrifying, yet always keeps you wanting to learn more about how it functions. Questions that might arise as you’re reading are all answered and explained in a believable way. If you wonder how the whole world came to be run by the same government without a protest or fight from anyone, you might find the answer in this quote from the book, “Combined with power, fear was unstoppable; it almost always won.”
Although reading about the lives of various characters was interesting and fun, it was a bit overwhelming trying to keep up with every new character that was introduced. Most of the time the introduction of a character was clear, but sometimes it felt like it was just thrown in there. Also, at times things were unnecessarily repetitive, or rewritten using different words. Lastly, I really wish the author would’ve finished the story in one book, instead of leaving you in suspense waiting for the next book.
I humbly rate Superbugs Book 1 3 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed reading about Tayma’s imagined future, which honestly doesn’t feel that far off from what might be the world in 2090. This book really made me think about what could happen if all humans consumed by fear of dying, stop trying to enjoy life and fall prisoners to the government’s aim of “keeping everybody safe.” A few mistakes are what kept me from giving this book a higher rating.
If like many people, you are someone that is overwhelmed by present events, then Superbugs Book 1 is for you. Maybe after spending some time in 2090, you will come back to your life and realize it might not be so bad after all. While I especially like that the author does not use curse words as is very common these days, there is some gore, which in my opinion is not suitable for people below the age of 18.
