The Wanting Hearts by Nicole Jordan is a collection of five wide-variety short stories, each with wildly different topics, and creative endings which stray from the linear storytelling style most readers are accustomed to.

Jordan’s stories were written to be clever, and witty, with comedic moments spread throughout her writing. These moments combined with the darker undertones of some of her stories make for an interesting read and a steer in a different direction for most readers.

Unfortunately, some of Jordan’s attempts at writing comedy or relatable characters can seem out of place in the stories and can rip the reader away from the atmosphere Jordan tries to submerge them in.

I rate this story 2 out of 4 stars. While the pacing at certain times disrupted the flow of the story, and strong use of profanity kept the book from reaching its potential as a unique and captivating piece, The Wanting Hearts is built from a strong foundation of creatively thought out short stories, and after a further revision, I believe it could be a solid staple on many readers’ shelves.

I recommend The Wanting Hearts to readers which find it difficult to commit themselves to a lengthy story. Jordan’s variety of stories left me eager to continue reading, rather than reluctant, and the size of them are determined well, with enough pages to communicate her stories without them seeming rushed. Additionally, readers should be aware of content warnings before they read, as Jodan’s stories contain pieces of homosexual content, as well as drug use, and child abuse, which may deter readers. Overall, I recommend The Wanting Hearts to those who are looking for an escape from the monotony many stories carry, without carrying high expectations. Jordan writes with passion, and personality in her works, though the informal language will keep it from achieving a high opinion in the eyes of many.
