The Wanting Hearts is a collection of short stories which cover fantastical concepts ranging from werewolves and vampires to alien life. In each story, Nicole Jordan conjures up a different realm with its own set of rules. An unexplained dream, an alien slave master, an old vampire forced to adjust to the times - these are just some of the subjects which Jordan explores in her stories.

Jordan’s creativity and imagination is the winning factor of The Wanting Hearts. She utilizes concepts familiar to fantasy fiction, for instance a vampire’s act of siring a human. Building on these concepts, she crafts strange and unfamiliar environments with ease and conveys them to the reader through simple and straightforward language. The reader is never confused and cruises through Jordan’s stories comfortably and with awe at the novel worlds that she has created. Jordan is also adept at designing unpredictable twists which hold the reader’s attention. No one is assured of a happy or sad ending until the very last word in the story. The notion that things are never as they appear underpin the entire book.

The book was poorly-edited with many obvious errors that could have been corrected with careful reading. At times, these errors interrupted the reading experience and made it less enjoyable. For instance, the word “wander” was stated wrongly as “wonder”, and the word “parents” as “patents”. Many other punctuation and spelling errors were littered throughout the book, detracting from its favorable first impression.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, partly due to the poor editing. Another factor was Jordan’s straightforward narration. Although it made the book an easy read, it was a double-edged sword as her description of environments and emotions sometimes left little to the imagination. At times, I was also left unsatisfied by the hasty development of the storylines and the lack of emotional depth to their characters. Nevertheless, the stories were interesting enough to leave me in anticipation of the next instalment in the series. Two of the stories, coincidentally my favorites, will hopefully be continued in Jordan’s next book.

This book is suitable for those who are interested in fantasy fiction, especially werewolf and vampire lore. It is an enjoyable read for its simplicity and candidness. All in all, it is a good choice for readers who wish to indulge in imaginative stories which delve deeper into common and well-established features of typical fantasy fiction.
