- Latest Review: We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz
Review by Avallena alberton -- We are Voulhire: Someone ...
From the previous books in this series, we learn that Galen is a refugee to Voulhire from the Lands of the Princes. We see Galen and his group of friends journey to Virko and after an attack, escape to Magnum Caelum. In We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End, Demetrius, who is a monk, tries to visit the Diadem to inform the church of the fate of Virko. After many failed attempts, Demetrius, Galen and Rowan decide to visit the capital of Voulhire and inform King Wilhelm about Virko's attack. Galen finds out that Rowan comes from one of the rich families and they visit Rowan's home. Meanwhile, the king is presiding over a case to allow refugees like Galen to come to the capital. The three friends manage to get an invitation to the proceedings from Rowan's parents. After the case begins, the floor shakes as all kinds of monsters appear. The Emperor of Lullabies unleashes his fury on the capital. Many are left dead and the fate of others remains unknown. Galen, Rowan and Demetrius manage to escape back to Magnum Caelum but trouble follows them there. The fate of the three is yet to be decided as Voulhire is torn between demons, men, mages and the Emperor of Lullabies.
What I liked most about the book was how Matthew Tysz referenced his previous books. Activities that took place in the previous books are connected to this one in one way or another. I was particularly impressed when the author linked the demons from the second book, The Fires of Virko, to this one. I also liked the flow of the story. There are events in different places all over Voulhire but the author manages to relate all of them without confusion. I also liked the author's vivid description of events, locations and people. During the attack on the capital city of Voulhire, the events were very captivating as they shifted from the demons to enormous worm-like creatures and the rhinos in the streets. I also liked that the author mentioned the next city that Galen, Rowan and Demetrius were going to visit at the end of the book.
What I disliked most about the book were new words that confused me sometimes. I was satisfied when I found that all these words were written down at the end of the book with their descriptions. It would have been better if they were at the beginning so that someone can know to look for any meanings while reading. This is the only thing I Disliked about the book.
I rate the book three out of four stars. I have not given the book a lower rating because it was an exceptional story and I loved reading it. I have not given the book a perfect rating of four stars because I found some grammatical errors. I have also not given it a higher rating because of what I disliked while reading it as mentioned above.
I would recommend this book to young adults and adults. I would specifically recommend it to those who love a mixture of magic, action, politics and adventure. They will love the adventure that the three friends take and enjoy the politics in Voulhire. The use of magic is also extensive and written in a way that is easy to understand. For anyone who likes action, I would recommend sticking around until the end of the story.
