At first glance, WE ARE VOULHIRE, A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Mathew Tysz seems like an ordinary tale of magicians and their strive for power. The more one reads the better they understand that the book weaves magic, governance, politics and dispute into a broader web that everyone wants to control.

Voulhire is described as a beautiful place full of opportunities. Galen is a man from the lands of the princes. Unlike Voulhire, the lands of the princes are filled with war and death. Galen lands in Magnum Caelum right after his uncle dies and finds out the uncle left him a forgery. With the help of Rowan, Galen manages to learn about this peaceful land and gets a monk as a friend. Meanwhile, a mage from Hilltop is imprisoned for treachery by the King. The mage feels betrayed by his friend, the king, and sits in his dark prison plotting against Voulhire. As power divides the king of Voulhire and other leaders, evil lurks and finally strikes that which they hold dear.

What I liked most about the book was the beginning. It was immediately captivating. There was a battle as the Mage was trying to overthrow a lord. I also liked the map that the author included during the introduction. It is a map of Voulhire to help readers understand the different places that are later mentioned in the story. I liked how the author portrayed the personalities of different people. It helped me understand them better and their roles in the story. I also liked the suspense that the story ends with.

What I disliked most about the story was the inclusion of very many places. Although there was a map provided, it was hard to remember where every place was and I found myself going back to view the map many times. I almost got confused with the many places. I was happy when I noticed the author had tried to make it simpler by dividing the places into different chapters and including headlines.

I rate the book three out of four stars. I have not given it a lower rating because I found the story very exciting. The author seemed to have put a lot of work into the book. I also found only six errors while reading. This is also the reason I have not given the book four stars. The errors could have easily been avoided while proofreading.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves fiction. The book has so many interesting scenes where magic has been used. The book also has a lot of action in the form of fighting. I would not recommend the book to anyone with a light stomach. There is a lot of gore as the author takes time explaining occurrences during battles.
