When Galen Bray left his first home in the rough, war-torn Lands of the Princes, he had no clue about the troubles and strife that awaited him in Voulhire. It's never an easy road to adapt to life-changing circumstances, such as finding your place and balance in a new country ruled by a king, with new people to meet and strange new customs to get used to. That road to adjustment becomes infinitely more rugged when you're trying to find your balance in a place where magic is not uncommon, where science, coupled with technology, are taking Voulhire and its people to new heights. This is a land where deadly schemes, spiced with backstabbing lies, brew like potions in a witches cauldron. Galen doesn't know it yet, but he's landed smack-dab in the middle of that bubbling brew.

Just days after he arrived and began settling into his new home in the small town of Magnum Caelum, where his great uncle left him a blacksmith's forge, Galen is approached by the town's mayor, asking him to help orchestrate a deal for iron with the industrious town of Virko. Willing to do anything to help the people of the town he now calls home, Galen sets off at once for Virko, accompanied by his two new friends; the cheeky Rowan and the reserved Demetrius. They have no idea what dangers lie in wait for them when they reach Virko. Meanwhile, a plot to take over the entire kingdom of Voulhire is underway, led by the hateful power-hungry mage, Lord Meldorath. The question now is, will Voulhire survive long enough for Galen to find his place in it? Or will the lies and thirst for power send it tumbling into the abyss of destruction?

We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko, is the second book in the We are Voulhire series, written by Matthew Tysz. This work of Sci-Fi/Fantasy contains many elements that I look for in a book: a good storyline, well-developed characters, good action, and last but not least, magic. I like how Matthew can interject new characters into the chapters as the tale continues. I also enjoyed the experiences, point of view and personal development of Galen as the story wends its way forward. The author has been careful to make sure that he doesn't confuse the individual stories as you move from one chapter to the next, which I appreciated.

Good points aside, there was something that put me off this book slightly. While Matthew is good at making sure he doesn't confuse the stories, there were times where I felt he had rushed his way through the writing of several chapters in the book. These chapters felt very abrupt to me, and I didn't get a good sense of flow as I read them, which left me floundering slightly when I turned a page, expecting to continue with the same chapter, only to find myself starting another.

I would recommend this book to readers who are fans of tales such as The Ropemaker, The Lord of the Rings, and The Mirror Chrinicles. I would also like to state that I found no grammatical or typographical errors within the book. For this reason, I am happy to state that this novel has been edited by a professional editor. There is quite a lot of graphic and mature content throughout this book. For that reason, I do not recommend this book to readers who are under seventeen years of age.

I am awarding this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. The reason for this being that no reader likes to take the time out of their day to read a book, which feels rushed and doesn't flow smoothly all the way through. I would have appreciated it so much more if Mr Tysz had made sure that each chapter was as good, if not better than the last, no matter how long it took.
