Terra or Planet Earth is facing an unwinnable trial and maybe annihilated if proven guilty. Sadly, the Terrans or humans have no idea about it. A group of unique and handpicked characters will join Zara in defending Terra against the celestial witnesses. They need to crack codes, answer riddles, and fight their way to the trial. And along the way, they will find new friends, will be reunited with their families, and will encounter enemies from in and out of this planet. How can Zara fight for the future of Terra if the evidence presented is all true? Why was she handpicked for this mission? Is Zara's human strength and skills enough to save Terra? And are the Terrans worthy of a second chance?

Zara Hanson and the Mystery of the Painted Symbol by J.L. Haynes is a story of saving Terra against forces beyond the finite mind. Zara and the rest of the group will fight against time and fate. The only weapon they have is their wit, their past, and each other. Can they succeed in this war?

What I like most about this book is how the author penned Zara. I admire her get-go attitude. She accepted everything at face value and very confident to trust her guts even if what is in front of her is unbelievable. She is loving and loyal but fierce and brave.

There is only one thing I dislike about this book. There are so many new ideas thrown around that I often found myself lost and groping for something steady to stand on. Some of the chapters have too much jargon that I feel overwhelmed with too much information. I know these are needed to build a universe far different from our own. But usually, a chapter or two is enough to cover this, but in this book, it is everywhere. After completing the book, I gave it another go, and that second look provided me a more satisfactory picture of the story. It gave me a firmer grasp of the reality the book wants to portray. And that is when I appreciated the story.

I believe it was professionally edited because I only found three minor errors. The story flow was a bit dragging. But the character development was reasonably good despite the jargon nuisance. And I also want to applaud the author for the ending. It added to the overall mystery the book exudes.

I give Zara Hanson and the Mystery of the Painted Symbol by J.L. Haynes 3 out of 4 stars. It contains the ingredients of an excellent book. It is action-packed and loaded with mystery, though the jargons are a turn-off. But that may just be me. I recommend this to sci-fi enthusiasts that want a new world to explore. I also recommend this to readers that want to try the world of sci-fi. Although it was not as engaging as I like it to be, any story that promotes saving Earth is always an excellent book for me. We try!
