Introducing the great nation of Voulhire, a nation known for its wealth and prosperity, a place where the hopeless find refuge, a nation where fortunes are changed. All seems good at first glance but the nation faces a great threat from enemies within its borders.

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz brings alive the beautiful and mystical nation of Voulhire. This novel is the first of its series, and I must admit, it did not disappoint. We are drawn into the rich diversity of its people, the uniqueness of its cities and its resources. The author told this story with the precision of a great surgeon, gently revealing layers upon layers of each character with style.

The story started with a bang. The raw viciousness of the antagonist was perfectly described. Next, was the vulnerability and simplicity of the young Galen followed by the genial and loving nature of the King. While reading this novel, I admired how the nation of Voulhire had cities that complemented each other in trade. The co-dependent relationship between the cities made it impossible for each city to survive on its own. For a city to survive, trade activities had to be continuous.

I particularly liked the actions of Galen once he assumed ownership of his uncle’s estate. I sense he might be the key to defeating the enemy, but his simple and timid nature could be his weakness. If he is to survive the madness, then he has to find his strength. Also, I felt the king’s approach to some issues was a bit lenient. I believe hiding a problem and believing it will sort itself out could be disastrous. I admired the tenacity of the head maid. She is simply a survivor. Just like cockroaches with the ability to survive a nuclear blast, she survived when no one else did.

I learnt two great lessons from this novel. Firstly, where there is smoke, there’s fire. At the first hint of trouble be on high alert, this might have saved many characters. Secondly, never underestimate your enemies. I find this story suitable for all lovers of magical stories, and suspense filled adventures. If you enjoy movie series, then this book is for you.

I did not notice any grammatical or typographical errors. I can’t wait to move on to the next book in its series. Like a chess game, the next move could determine the fate of Voulhire. For these reasons, I rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz 4 out of 4 stars .
