Matthew Tysz wrote We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko as the second book in his series. It follows Galen and his gang as they travel across Voulhire discovering people's various secrets and try to help them. It unfolds in a sometimes sarcastic, mostly heroic manner. Another main character whose perspective the book is written out of is Folcro. You travel with him as he expresses all the emotions he has bottled up for so long. Although the way he expresses himself might cause you to question your faith in fantasy books’ characters.

The development of the characters was incredible to witness. The main character – Galen – may have started as a very innocent character, and he still is, but you can see how with each new experience that he experiences he grows, matures and learns many different things. As with the previous book, there is another main character, Folcro. You get to see the twisted mind of a character that very clearly needs therapy – even though this sounds creepy, it is fascinating to see.

In Matthew's previous book, there were only a few creepy scenes, but in this book, it was kicked up a notch. It was not for the faint of heart. There were some truly scary scenes in the book. It might just be that I am more sensitive with this than other people, but I have included a small passage below to give an idea of what I am talking about. Page 126 says:

“The pig-headed man brought his large hand up and grabbed the woman's head. The woman screamed as her skin burned into smoke in the unforgiving grip. The beast who held her just stood, keeping her head perfectly in place, watching her scream and burn.”

I applaud Matthew Tysz’ creativity and his ability to accurately paint a picture in one’s mind, though for me this book was a little too descriptive for my taste.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars because the book was well written. The editing done in the book was great, and the story was amazing. However, I am not giving the book full stars simply because the book was a lot darker than anticipated or that could be described as "pleasant".

This is a true fantasy book. The magic use in the book is artistic and unlike anything I have ever seen before. If this is the type of thing that also excites you, you will love this book. If you love seeing how different psychological characters make decisions and face interesting consequences, you will love this book. If you want a book to engage your heart and mind and imagination, read this book.
