Review by nimitn -- The Great Awakening by Arthur F Seymour
The Great Awakening by Arthur Seymour is a book that tells a tale of a pandemic outbreak that happens many years into the future. It explores how a family with the help of futuristic technology faces the battle against an extremely infectious and deadly virus.
There are a few poems in the book that are well written and form a great metaphor with the storyline of the book. On the other hand, the kind of technology described in the book is interesting and transports you into a new era of scientific advancements. These two aspects of the book are the top two best things about this book.
Since the book deals with a pandemic outbreak that forces people to live in isolation. We are instantly able to relate to the situation the characters might be facing. The challenges that such a pandemic can cause and the reaction to it should have been explored a little more in order to build the atmosphere of the crisis faced.
Although the whole concept of the book is interesting the plot gets slow and confusing to follow through. There are many characters mentioned in the story but none of them seem to establish a relationship with the reader. Perhaps, writing a bit more about their background story would help the reader to relate with them. Or maybe describing their thought process or including some sense of humor in their conversations would help build a connection. Besides this, the technological advancements and technical terms discussed in the book seem to add to the confusion and do not help in keeping the story coherent.
The author mentions the presence of a few QR codes in the book that can be used to enhance the reading experience. It’s a good and courageous attempt to try something new, but QR codes seemed to have disrupted the flow of the story. Instead of enhancing the experience, it distracts the reader. The same is true with the images placed in several places in the book.
With just one misprint it is safe to say that the book has been professionally edited with absolutely no grammatical or spelling errors. However, I would still rate this book 2 out of 4 stars because the overall flow of the story was not captivating enough. The premise of the story seemed promising but fell short in expectations. The language used by the authors is really good and has no swear words making it suitable for anyone and everyone to read. Especially those who like to read science fiction books.
