Review by _khush_p -- The Sins of a Master Race
Written by Matthew Tysz, The Sins of a Master Race is the third book in The Turn series. The Turn is described as a geoscientific event, one that turned the world into an unrecognizable mass. After only 10% of the population is left alive, everyone tries to survive the turned world in whatever way possible. From these survivors emerge the 3 main characters of this book, Ashley, Scholar, and Cattleprod. The Sins of a Master Race is the ongoing story of these 3 survivors who take on several unknown adventures throughout the series.
After the previous book, Cattleprod has now captured Interstate and is trying to expand his empire. Scholar and Ashley are now running a branch of SIMO on their ship, Nightmare’s End. Things seem to be going normal, as normal as a turned world can go, when Interstate discovers a new city of winged men, who describe themselves as worshippers of Marat, the supposed god of Heaven and Hell. It gets more interesting when an unknown man requests Scholar to save a new species being attacked by demons. Soon enough, many different species are being discovered, with no information on how they got there. These species are threatened by a pair of archdemons, the Defury cousins. The turned world is changing drastically, would Ashley and Scholar fight this changing world or go along with it? Read on to find out!
The Sins of a Master Race is a remarkable book packed with science fiction, fantasy, and adventure. The story mainly follows the old characters from the series, only a couple of new ones are being introduced. The characters are just as attention-grabbing as in the previous books, if not more. Fiction in this story is presented in the form of new non-human creatures, several new gods, and equally different worlds. The book is full of action scenes and thrilling encounters between the characters.
This book might be my favourite in the series so far. What I mostly liked was the plot. I loved how old characters showed up at a certain point, giving a boost of excitement to the already pleasant plot. The action scenes are well described and well placed. I almost didn’t want to stop reading. The bromance was a refreshing occurrence, an enjoyable change from typical romance. The characters complemented each other well, the duo of Ashley and Scholar might be my all-time favourite. There was a nice mix of sombreness and amusement making the story more stimulating. And not to forget the marvellous writing style of Matthew Tysz, the story was practically playing in front of my eyes. There were not too many complicated words and the editing was perfect. For me, this book was a very entertaining and enjoyable read.
There are a number of things that a reader might not like as much. Top of the list is puzzlement, so many things are happening at the same time, it’s hard to keep track and remember them all. It was difficult to remember the timeline, if some things were happening at the same time was hard to tell. There are changes between the present and the past which can be confusing too. There are mentions of assault, slavery, and gory details in some places which might not suit sensitive readers. There is an ample amount of swearing and sexual details which makes this book a no-go for kids.
To sum it up, I rate The Sins of a Master Race a 4 out of 4 stars. There is very little to dislike and plenty of things to love. This book can be a perfect read for fantasy and sci-fi lovers who don’t mind lengthy series. For those who want to start reading The Turn series, enter at your own risk, you won’t be able to leave!
