Review by Romi4everram -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival...
What can you lose when you have nothing left, no other thing in your future but only an early death, one way or another? To Galen Bray choosing is very simple: “In the Lands of the Princes, it was death by the sword or slow starvation,” he tells us. So he jumped onto the first boat that would take him far away from his homeland and began a new life in Voulhire, in a city called Magnum Caelum. He travelled for a week in harsh conditions on a ship, to get to his new life, his future. And with the help of his recent friend Rowan he begins to settle into his new home, courtesy of his deceased uncle, who also left him a forge as well as his money.
King Wilhem Arcolo of Voulhire is concerned about two successive rulers of Hillport city, Lord Orlin and Lord Meldorath, who have betrayed him and his people, so he executed them. To help the people to heal the horrors inflicted by these two, he sent his dear friend Eldus Alderman and his family to restore the faith in his kingship. Alderman, a former judge of the king's court, settled with his family and promptly began to do everything in his power to aid the people to stop being so scared of Lord Meldorath. He is dead after all, and there is no reason to fear the dead, right?
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a catching novel about a fantasy world created by Matthew Tysz. The novel is full of vivid imagery, memorable characters, and detailed descriptions of each scene.
The story is narrated from two different points of view: from Galen's point of view and the rest of the chapters, from an omniscient viewpoint. It is focused on several events that all lead to a critical fact: something sinister is unfolding in Voulhire. And not only the world of the Cosmos, the dimension ruled by time and space, is involved but also Caromentis, the dimension ruled by chaos.
I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy world created by Matthew Tysz, where mages and ordinary folks live in harmony, and the landscape represents the spirit of the people that inhabits them. I also liked the way Galen is portrayed as innocent as a child. Through Galen´s eyes, we can see everything in this world is worth contemplating, and his kindness and good heart compels you to go on reading to get to know him better. The story is quite the page-turner, with no dull moments, not even when dwelling on a character’s thoughts.
This book is exceptionally well edited since I didn't find a single error. I found some profane words, like “tits”, etc., but there were no more than a few, nothing extreme. So, for all of this, I rated it four stars out of four. I recommend it to those people who love fantasy novels and endearing characters, but also despicable mages. I’m looking forward to the sequels of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies!
